If Brexit is achieved on 31 October 2019, British citizens will be considered "third-country nationals" in the EU as of 1 November 2019. In Germany, they must thus comply with the provisions of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), and require a residence permit.

On 28 June 2019, the German Federal Council passed the Skilled Immigration Act, which is due to take effect at the beginning of 2020. The Skilled Immigration Act amends or modifies the previous provisions of the Residency Act.
