If Brexit is achieved on 31 October 2019, British citizens will be considered "third-country nationals" in the EU as of 1 November 2019. In Germany, they must thus comply with the provisions of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), and require a residence permit.

Brexit will negate even long-term residence already acquired as part of free movement. The Dresden Immigration Office will be contacting all British citizens living in the state capital, and informing them of what happens next. As a first step, we ask all those affected to fill out the short questionnaire and return it to the Immigration Office. The information will help us assign residence permits down the track. On 28 June 2019, the German Federal Council passed the Skilled Immigration Act, which is due to take effect at the beginning of 2020. The Skilled Immigration Act amends or modifies the previous provisions of the Residency Act. The immigration formalities for skilled workers with qualified vocational qualifications are simplified in order to compensate for deficits on the German labour market. The content of this website will be adapted before the Skilled Immigration Act takes effect, so as to ensure you are adequately informed.
