Permanent residence permit for a long-term EU residence

This permanent residence permit (Sect. 9b AufenthG) requires almost the same preconditions as the permanent residence permit according to Sect. 9 AufenthG. However, it not only entitles you to unlimited national residence, but also facilitates your mobility within the EU.

Conditions for the right of residence

You

have been residing in Germany with a residence permit for five years without interruption and
secure your livelihood and that of your dependants through fixed and regular income.*

* Here the authorities also check whether you are in arrears with the tax office and whether you have made compulsory contributions to the statutory pension plan for at least 60 months or are entitled to comparable benefits from an insurance or pension plan.

As the holder of this residence permit, you have the right to obtain a temporary residence permit if you move to another European member state.

Please note:

Sect. 9b AufenthG specifically regulates which periods of residence are credited towards the required five years of uninterrupted residence in Germany. Here too, only half of the time spent studying and undergoing professional training with the corresponding residence permit is taken into account, for example.
