The EU Blue Card for academics
The EU Blue Card is a special type of residence title for highly qualified employees in the European member states. It offers greater mobility within Europe and faster access to an unlimited residence permit than other residence titles.
An EU Blue Card can be applied for in all EU Member States apart from Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Differences apply with regard to the conditions, e.g. the amount of the gross annual salary.
The EU Blue Card is a temporary residence title that is issued in principle for a period of four years, or duration of the employment contract (plus three months) if it is shorter. It can be extended if the requirements are met.
Conditions for the right of residence
- a German or a recognised foreign or comparable foreign university degree
- an employment contract or a binding job offer
- a minimum annual gross salary of 58.400 euros or 45.552 euros in the occupational fields of the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, human medicine (not including dentistry) and computer science
